The author referred to them as gentlemen because nicola and jacopo though they didnt look like gentlemen tbey worked hard day and night trying to earn enough money to one day finally cure their sisters sickness...they didnt even care how much they got rest...they worked hard and did various jobs when they are supposed to be at school...the author was amazed by their true act of love for their sister thats why he called them two gentlemen of verona...
