Answer:

The Himalayas have an important impact on the climate of India. Only the presence of the Himalayas makes India a monsoon country. It traps the monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, forcing them to lose their moisture content in the form of snow and rain throughout the Indian subcontinent

The Himalayas operate as a climatic barrier in two ways:

  • The Himalayas keep chilly winds from Central Asia from entering India. This keeps India from having extremely frigid winters.
  • The Himalayas also keep rain-bearing monsoon winds from leaving the area, allowing it to get adequate rainfall.

It also prevents cold winter storms from entering India, sparing us from extreme cold. The Himalayas divide the westerly jet streams into two branches, one of which enters India and plays an important part in delivering the monsoon.

In the following aspects, the Himalayas serve as an ideal climatic divide:

  • It serves as a barrier between India and Central Asia.
  • The Himalayas function as a barrier to chilly winds that blow from central Asia and thereby prevent the Northern Plains from getting very cold
  • The Himalayas operate as a barrier to moisture-laden monsoon winds from the southwest.
  • When these winds hit the mountain, rain falls on the Northern Plains.
  • The SW winds would have flown across to Central Asia without creating rainfall in the Northern Plains if the Himalayas were not present.
