Sponge is compressible because it is having minute pores in which air is trapped .on presssing the air is expelled. it is still considered as a solid because it has a definite volume and shape does not changes unlesss compressed.

It is so because a sponge has minute pores which allow them to trap air, when sponge is compressed the air comes out of the sponge again and the volume of the sponge is fixed it does not changes on compressing. That's why it is a solid even though it traps air.
