Although the author was not a vindictive man he was very happy to see the twenty one stone lady who had impoverished him twenty years ago, and says he had finally had his revenge. The writer did not take the revenge directly; it was fate or gods that had taken revenge. The lady had met the writer 20 years ago; the writer took her to a lunch where she ate so much. The writer had to pay an enormous bill. After twenty years when he met her again, he was satisfied to see her grow quite fat. Now she weighed twenty-one stones. The writer believed it to a revenge for making him spend so much of money twenty years ago.

The author says on seeing the lady after twenty years that the lady's embarrassment in the restaurant was avenged in due time as the lady was now only twenty-one stones.

  • The question has been asked from the story The Luncheon by William Somerset Maugham’s.
  • The author relates events, full of laughter and irony, twenty years ago between the author and the lady at a restaurant. He narrates how a lady suggested him tactfully to meet her at a Foyot restaurant of high standard.
  • Despite the poor economic condition of the author at the time, it was very ironic to visit a highly luxurious restaurant like Foyot and a lady for a lunch and how, at that time, he couldn't turn down her offer just to face an awkward restaurant situation.
