Although the British and the Indian Parliament brought many laws to end social evils, yet they continue
to exist in the Indian society. Justify the statement.

Even though British passed laws to bring about social reforms number of those practices continue exist in the Indian society. One can give example of the following:

a. Child Marriage Restraint Act was passed in 1927 which sought to abolish child marriage and provided that no man below the age of 18 ( later 21) and girls below the age of 16 ( later 18) should be married. However, still today 20% of girls in India are married below the age of 18.

b. The British also passed the law in 1856 legalizing widow remarriage. However, still in India the rate of widow remarriage is very low.

c. We can also give example, of Sati which was banned in 1829, however, it is still practiced in some rural communities in India. In 2006, a 35 year old women was forced to perfoRm sati in a village in UP.
