Answer:

Aluminum has higher tendency to oxidize than iron but still it is considered as a safe metal because aluminium has tendency to combine with oxygen and form a protective layer of aluminum oxide on it. On the other hand, when iron combines with atmospheric oxygen it results in the formation of rust. So, it is safer to keep food and other substances in aluminum vessels than to keep it in iron vessel.

Aluminium has a higher tendency to oxidize than iron but still, it is considered a safe metal because it doesn't rust and forms a defensive layer of aluminium oxide on it.

Why is it so?

  • Aluminium tends to oxidize more than iron yet it is considered a protected metal since aluminium has the propensity to join with oxygen and structure a defensive layer of aluminium oxide on it.
  • Then again, when iron joins with air oxygen it brings about the development of rust.
  • Thus, it is more secure to keep food and different substances in aluminium vessels than to keep them in iron vessels.

For what reason does aluminium not rust when it is high in reactivity?

  • Aluminium doesn't rust (consume) because its surface is safeguarded by a characteristic layer of aluminium oxide.
  • This forestalls the metal underneath from coming into contact with air (containing oxygen).
  • Dissimilar to rust, which can chip off the outer layer of iron and steel protests, the layer of aluminium oxide doesn't drop off.
  • It is called defensive passivation.
