Aluminium is a good conductor of heat while coal is not. What do you understand by this
statement?
Answers
Heat conduction mechanisms are not simple, but there are (normally) two important mechanisms by which solids conduct heat.
Electrons, free to move around the crystal lattice conduct heat in metals. So a good electrical conductor is usually found to be a good conductor of heat. E.g. copper is great at both.
The other mechanism by which heat can be transferred is by lattice vibrations, or if you are thinking in quantum terms .... phonons. This is how most electrical insulators conduct heat. Diamond is a fantastic example of this ... it is a very good conductor of heat, but the conduction is by phonons, not electrons. It would make an excellent heat-sink for electronic components if it wasn't for the fact that it would be extremely expensive !
Answer:
We understand that aluminium is a metal .we can conclude that metals are good conductors of heat while insulators are poor conductors of heat.
