because when aluminium comes in contact with atmosphere it makes a very stable layer of its oxide i.e. aluminium oxide on its surface. This layer does not let further aluminium to come in contact with air and thus prevents its reactivity with food. Therefore aluminium is used for packing food though it is a reactive metal.

Aluminium when left open dwvelops a protective layer of aluminium oxide, hence preventing it from any further reaction..
