Aluminium is reactive only when a freshly scrached surface is exposed to atmosphere.

But instantaneously , the freshly scrached surface gets oxidised & Al2O3 oxide layer is formed which covers the whole surface. This Al2O3 layer formed is adherent , impervious & tenacious with the base metal- preventing further oxidation.

Further Al2O3 layer is not toxic to food items, medicines, chacolates or cigerettes. Hence aluminium foil is used for packaging the food items.
