When aluminium is exposed to air it reacts with oxygen and forms a white thin layer of aluminium oxide on its surface. This layer forms protective coating on aluminium and prevents the reaction of aluminium with oxygen. Aluminium metal with this protective layer is used for making cooking utensils.

Aluminium is highly reactive and when exposed to air it very actively oxidises to becomes it oxide known as alumina.
This protective layer of aluminium oxide or alumina prevents further corrosion of the metal and acts as a protective layer.
Hope it helps.....
