normally carbon is used as reducing agent during extraction of metals like fe. however aluminium is strong reducing agent and cannot be reduced by carbon. also Al-o bond is externally strong requires high energy above 2000 c, which is difficult to maintain hence electrolytic reduction method which is easier and cheaper
