aluminium is extracted from its oxide by electrolytic reduction and not by the conventional reducing agent

normally carbon is used as reducing agent during extraction of metals like fe. however aluminium is strong reducing agent and cannot be reduced by carbon. also Al-o bond is externally strong requires high energy above 2000 c, which is difficult to maintain hence electrolytic reduction method which is easier and cheaper
