Aluminothermic reduction

In 1895 Hans Goldschmidt developed a process for carbon-free extraction of heavy reducible metals from oxides such as chromium, vanadium, titanium and others through aluminum. GfE has been using this process in big plants for 50 years. High-purity metals and alloys cann be produced with ceramic crucibles. Temperatures of up to 2,500 ° C can be reached in automatically continuous exothermic reactions between metal oxides and aluminum. The heavy metal accumulates at the bottom of the crucible, the lighter aluminum oxide floats on the liquid metal.

Frequently produced alloy types include vanadium aluminum (VAl), nickel niobium (NiNb), ferro niobium (FeNb), molybdenum aluminum (MoAl) and chromium metal powder.
