AM is used for broadcasting because
(i) it is more noise immune than other modulation systems
(ii) it requires less transmitting power compared to other systems
(iii) it avoids receiver complexity
(iv) no other modulation system can provide the necessary bandwidth
for faithful transmission.

(iii) AM is used because it avoids the complexity at receiver end.

Explanation:

In DSB we have to generate a local carrier to demodulate the signal which is very complex process. We have to use PLL or Costast Loop. To avoid this complexity AM is used. In AM carrier signal is transmitted along with the modulated signal. At receiving end, a diode, low pass filter and a capacitor is used to demodulate the single. Envelop detection may also be used.
