let the total distance be ' d ' km

let the time taken to travel first half of distance = t1

and next half = t2

then t1 + t2 = 5 hours 15 min = 5 1/4 hours........( 1 )

distance = speed * time

..for first half

_____________

distance = d/2 speed = 60 km/h

=> t1 = distance / speed

=> t1 = ( d /2 ) / 60

=> t1 = d/120............( 2 )

......for next half of distance

____________________________

distance = d/2 speed = 45 km/h

then ,

t2 = distance / speed

t2 = (d/2 ) / 45

=> t2 = d / 90

from equation ( 1 )

t1 + t2 = 5 1/4

d/120 + d / 90 = 21/4

( d/30 ) ( 1/4 + 1/3 ) = 21 / 4

( d/30 ) ( 7/12 ) = 21/4

=> d / 90 = 3

=> d = 270 km

then t1 = d / 120 = 270 / 120 = 9/4 = 2 1/4 = 2 hours 15 minutes

t2 = d / 90 = 270 / 90 = 3 hours

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU
