amar got 30% of max marks =.3x

i.e (x*30/100)

but he failed by 10 marks,

therefore passing mark i.e y=.3x+10

now, sahil got 40% of max mark=.4x

but he get 15 marks more than passing marks,

therefore passing mark i.e y= .4x-15

now from both the eqtns,

.4x-15=.3x+10

x=250 i.e max marks

therefore passing marks(put value of x)

y=.4x-15=.3x+10= 85
