Given:

A marathon runner beats her personal best time of 4 hours 30 minutes by 5%

To Find:

what is her new  best time?

a. 4 hours 16 minutes 30 seconds

b. 4 hours 17 minutes

c. 4 hours 17 minutes and 30 seconds

d. 4 hours 18 minutes

Solution:

A percentage is a number or a ratio that can be expressed as a fraction of 100, denoted by '%'.

We are given that a runner beats her personal best time of 4 hours and 30 minutes by 5%, so to find the new best time we need to first find the value of 5% of her previous time,

=5% of 4hr30min

=5% of 270mim

=13.5min

Now to get the new best time we will subtract this value from the previous time, we have

New best time=270-13.5

                       =256.5mins

which can be expressed as 4 hours, 16 minutes and 30 seconds

Hence, the correct option is (a).
