The tree is traditionally lit by the President of the United States.

The National Christmas Tree is a large evergreen tree which is located near the White House in the northeast quadrant of The Ellipse in Washington D.C. The tradition of lighting a national tree was started on December 24, 1923. President Calvin Coolidge was the first President who lit the tree. He pressed a button which lit up more than 2,500 light bulbs strung around a 60 feet tall balsam fir tree.

Since 1954 the event has marked the beginning of month-long festivities called the Pageant of Peace. There are smaller trees around the National Christmas Tree which are referred to as the Pathway to Peace.
