5

let the number be x.

According to the given question,

8 (x - 5/2) = 3x

8x − 20 = 3x

Transposing 3x to L.H.S and −20 to R.H.S, we obtain

8x − 3x = 20

5x = 20

Dividing both sides by 5, we obtain

x = 4

Hence, the number is 4.

Solution :

Let the the unknown number be x

 by \: following \: steps \\ \\ \\ x - \frac{5}{2} \\ \\ \\ \left( x - \frac{5}{2}\right) \times 8 \\ \\ \\ result \: obtained = 3x \\ \\ \\ by\: equating \\ \\ \\ \left(x - \frac{5}{2}\right) \times 8 = 3x \\ \\ \\ \left( \frac{2x -5}{2}\right) \times 8 = 3x \\ \\ \\ \frac{16x - 40}{2} = 3x \\ \\ \\ by \: cross \: multiplication \\ \\ \\ 16x - 40 = 6x \\ \\ \\ 16x - 6x = 40 \\ \\ \\ 10x = 40 \\ \\ \\ x = \frac{\cancel{40}}{\cancel{10}}

{\pink{\boxed{x = 4}}}

Verification :

 4 - \frac{\cancel{5}}{\cancel{2}} \\ \\ \\ 4 - 2.5 = 1.5 \\ \\ \\ 1.5 \times 8 = 12 \\ \\ \\ 3x = 3 \times 4 = 12 \\ \\ \\ 12= 12 \\ \\ \\ hence \: verified
