let the prize of apples be x and mango be y

so 3x + y = 14

so the prize of mango → y = 14 - 3x

1. now 5x + 2y + 13 = 6x + 4y

5x + 2 (14 - 3x) + 13 = 6x + 4 ( 14 - 3x)

2x + 28 - 6x + 13 = 6x + 56 - 12x

-4x + 41 = -6x + 56

2x = 15

x = 7.5

2. x = 2y

so, x = 2 ( 14 - 3x )

x = 28 - 6x

7x = 28

x = 4

answer = B

Solution :-

Let ,

  • Cost of an apple = $ x .
  • Cost of a mango = $ y .

so,

→ 3x + y = $ 14 ------- Eqn.(1)

→ y = $ (14 - 3x) .

Statement 1) :-

→ (6x + 4y) - (5x + 2y) = $13

→ 6x - 5x + 4y - 2y = 13

→ x + 2y = 13 ------- Eqn.(2)

Multiply Eqn.(1) by 2 and subtracting Eqn.(2) from result ,

→ 6x + 2y - x - 2y = 28 - 13

→ 5x = 15

→ x = $3

putting this value,

→ y = (14 - 3*3) = $5 .

Statement 2) :-

→ x = 2y

putting this value in Eqn.(1)

→ 3(2y) + y = 14

→ 7y = 14

→ y = $2 .

then,

→ x = $4 .

therefore, B) the question can be answered using either statement alone .
