Answer:

The cost of each pen is ₹ 15 and the cost of a dozen pencils is ₹9.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the cost of each pen be 'x' and a dozen pencils be 'y'. Then,

18x + 6y = 324 ...(i)

11x  + 8y = 237 ...(ii)

Multiply 8 to equation (i) and 6 to equation (ii),

144x + 48y = 2592 ...(iii)

66x + 48y = 1422  ...(iv)

Subtract (iv) from (iii),

144x - 66x + 48y - 48y = 2592 - 1422

78x + 0  = 1170

x = 1170 / 78

x = 15

Using x = 15 in (i)

(18 * 15) + 6 y = 324

270 + 6y  = 324

6y = 324 - 270

6y = 54

y = 54 / 6

y = 9

∴ The cost of each pen is ₹ 15 and the cost of a dozen pencils is ₹9.

Answer:

The cost of each pen is ₹ 15 and the cost of a dozen pencils is ₹9.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the cost of each pen be 'x' and a dozen pencils be 'y'. Then,

18x + 6y = 324 ...(i)

11x  + 8y = 237 ...(ii)

Multiply 8 to equation (i) and 6 to equation (ii),

144x + 48y = 2592 ...(iii)

66x + 48y = 1422  ...(iv)

Subtract (iv) from (iii),

144x - 66x + 48y - 48y = 2592 - 1422

78x + 0  = 1170

x = 1170 / 78

x = 15

Using x = 15 in (i)

(18 * 15) + 6 y = 324

270 + 6y  = 324

6y = 324 - 270

6y = 54

y = 54 / 6

y = 9

∴ The cost of each pen is ₹ 15 and the cost of a dozen pencils is ₹9.
