Let us take that Amitesh bought x pens and y pencils.

So total no. of pens and pencils = x + y.

But it is given 108.So,

ATQ, x + y = 108.

or y = 108-x ...................(1)

Cost of 1 pen = ₹5

Therefore cost of x pens = ₹5x.

Cost of 1 pencil = ₹2.50.

Therefore cost of y pencils = ₹2.50x.

Total cost of pens and pencils = ₹5x + ₹2.50y.

But it is given ₹345.So,

ATQ , ₹5x + ₹2.50y =₹345.

or ₹5x + ₹2.50×(108-x)=₹345.(from.........1)

or ₹5x + ₹270 - ₹2.50x = ₹345.

or ₹2.50x = ₹345-₹270.

or ₹2.50x = ₹75.

or x = ₹75/₹2.50

Therefore x = 30.

Therefore no.of pens = x =30.

Therefore no. of pencils = 108-x = 108-30 =78
