Ammeter is connected in series because in series circuits voltage is same thought but current isn't.
Vice-versa in parallel circuits

ammeter is connected in series as it has lesser resistance compared to voltmeter if there is fluctuations between the resistance it could cause a short-circuit which can cause a fire.. hope it helps
