Ammonia is a pungent smelling gas with alkaline nature. It reacts with oxygen with two ways :--
◼Burning in presence of oxygen
When dry ammonia gas is passes over in the container containing oxygen it donot ignite but burns in atmosphere with greenish yellow flame forming nitrogen and water.
◼When ammonia reacts with oxygen in presence of catalyst.
When ammonia gas and oxygen is passed over platinum which acts as a catalyst,
▶ A colourless gas is formed which is nitric oxide which on further oxidation gives a reddish brown gas nitrogen dioxide.
▶Water is formed
▶Since, the reaction is exothermic platinum emits reddish glow
