Let me clarify some matters before telling which one is better. How do IPS and AMOLED display work?

IPS display requires LED back light to make the display visible. This is similar to reading books with a torch light. You can’t see the pages of book without help of any external light.

Ok, but AMOLED display doesn’t need any extra LED lights. Individual pixels in AMOLED display has it’s own light. So there is no extra LED lights in AMOLED display.



As there is no extra LED lights required to lit up the AMOLED display, this is super power efficient. When you open a full black photo in AMOLED display, the pixels will actually keep turned off! When you open an image which have partial black and partial other colors, the black portion remains off. That’s why it consumes less power. You can use features like “always on display”, “Night clock” etc. in AMOLED displays. These are features where you can display clock and calendar on a black screen which remains on all the time without sacrificing remarkable battery consumption.

IPS display requires extra light source. So the display remains on even if you open a black image.

AMOLED displays are much more bright and vivid compared to IPS.

AMOLED screens also use a large colour gamut, so they can display a wide range of colours, but that can also cause images to look very vibrant or over-saturated. Then there's HD Super AMOLED, which is just a 720 x 1280 Super AMOLED display and Full HD Super AMOLED, which, you guessed it, is Full HD 1080 x 1920.
