Question :

Determine the covalent nature of chlorides of group 1

Answer :

Group 1 includes the Alkali Metals which are Lithium,Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium and Cesium. Francium being the radioactive element isn't considered

Factors affecting covalent nature :

  • Larger the polarizing power, lesser is the covalent nature

  • Lesser is size of the cation, more is the covalent nature

Thus,

CsCl > RbCl > KCl > NaCl > LiCl

Same would be case for all the Alkyl Halides like Bromides,Flourides etc

Group -1 Includes the Alkali metals which are Lithium, Sodium,Potassium,Rubidum, Caesium

factors Influencing covalent:

Atomic size of atoms forming covalent bond should be smaller

THUS

CsCl > RbCl > KCl > NaCl >LiCl
