The heat energy released when new bonds are made between the ions and water molecules is known as the hydration enthalpy of the ion.
If the hydration enthalpy of an ion is high, it means that the hydrated ion is very stable.

As the above image suggests, hydration occurs because of attraction of lone pair of electrons on oxygen atom with a positive ion.
Thus, more the attraction, more is hydration, more will be hydration enthalpy.
If positive charge density is large, there will be more attraction and hence more hydration enthalpy.
Hence we can say hydration enthalpy is
Directly proportional to charge
Inversely proportional to size.
For group 1 elements, charge is constant (single positive charge). Hence, hydration enthalpy is inversely proportional to size. Size increases as we go down the group due to addition of more shells.
Hence we can say that hydration enthalpy is maximum for lithium cation amongst the group 1 elements.
