Megasthenese has appreciated the grand palaces of Pataliputra.

He was an ancient Greek diplomat and historian as well as an Indian explorer and ethnographer. He belonged to the Hellenistic period. He visited India during the reign of Chandragupta Maurya.

His description of India is given in his book Indika. The book is sadly lost now although later writers have made quotes to this in his works.

It is not known which other parts of India he visited apart from Pataliputra.
