1.What did Akbar want to test?
Ans- Akbar wanted to test the strength of the common man in his kingdom. He
wanted to find out if any man could stand on the cold water of the river for
one night.
2. What did the drummer announce to the people?
Ans- The drummer announced to the people that anyone who could stand in
the river for one night near the palace would be richly rewarded.
3. Who won the test set by Akbar?
Ans- The poor washerman won the test set by Akbar.
4. Why did Akbar not reward the man at first?
Ans- Akbar did not reward the man at first because a courtier told him that the
water was not really cold because the light from the palace keep it warm.
5. What did Birbal do to make Akbar realize his mistake?
Ans- Birbal lit a fire on the ground. Far above it, on a branch of a tree, he
placed a cooking pot. He told Akbar that he was warming his pot to cook food.
Akbar asked how the fire could warm his cooking pot from such a distance, to
which Birbal replied that it did so in the samw way as the light of the place
warmed the river water. Hearing this, Akbar realised his mistake.
