Traveling in bus

  • Crowd (P-1a) - This is a bigger problem when referring to a local bus. In peak hours, the unusually high footfall on hot routes means that a bus with a seating capacity of 40 easily holds over 60 people.
  • Poor seat comfort (P-1b) - The quality of seats on older buses in India is not conducive for comfortable travel - torn seat covers, missing seat foam, etc are some typical problems.
  • Inadequate ventilation (P-1c) - A majority of the buses in use today are not air-conditioned. Among them, a lot have an old design that was more towards ease of building based on then technology, and less on using advanced materials, ergonomics and passenger comfort. Poor ventilation of air, which gets aggravated in highly crowded situations, is a rampant issue because of it.
  • ETA (P-1d) - With no technological assistance (except few buses of recent in major cities, that show area name on a screen) giving indication of current location, estimated time of arrival to destination and other details, a passenger cannot best utilize the time at hand. Visual cues of landmarks you can see outside are the only way to know where you are, given that you're familiar with the region!
  • Unruly public (P-1e) - Incidents about molestation, harassment, disrespect to elders/disabled persons are becoming so common that they're not even broadcast in news - people just accept it as a part of their daily lives. However, this problem has more to do with the way of thinking of people, more than technological shortcomings.
  • Payment hassle (P-1f) - Since cash is the predominant mode of payment, carrying appropriate change is needed if you wish to avoid the wrath of the irritated and overworked conductors. In addition, since vending tickets is done manually, it can be prone to human error.
