Oxides of metals which have both acidic as well as basic behaviour are known as amphoteric oxides.. Examples of Amphoteric oxides are aluminium oxide and zinc oxide.

Al2O3 + 6HCl gives 2AlCl3 + 3H2O 
Al2O3 +2NaOH gives 2NaAlO2 + H2O
