Answer

Trees, the quintessential elements in our lives.

Picture this: The trees of our planet vanished out of the blue. What do you think would happen next? Nothing but a shattering catastrophe for all the lives on Earth. We wouldn't be able to go on for long without the trees. We are dependent on trees for oxygen, for preventing flooding and erosion, for filtering air from pollutants, for generating rainfall that feeds our crops, and the list could go on ad infinitum. With the trees, humanity would vanish too.

Such a dark scenario.

What if I told you that this is what we are on the verge of facing.

I visited a hill station just a few weeks ago. I expected to see beautiful flora and fauna with the freshness of the forest. And, this was totally what I did not see. The area was utterly deforested.

Trees help prevent flooding and soil erosion, absorbing thousands of liters of stormwater. Without them, the rains would turn into devastating floods. When young, they offer habitation and food to communities of birds and insects. One mature oak can be home to as many as 500 different species of birds. They reduce wind speeds and cool the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upwards from their leaves.

Us, humans forget that they one of the most essential parts of our lives. We, despite that, continue to practice deforestation. In 2016, the World Bank reported that the equivalent of 1,000 football fields of the forest has been lost every hour since 1990. That's a total of 1.3 million square kilometers.

Why do we forget that without the trees, our survival is impossible? Everyone should understand that forests are the lifeline of humanity. They are a crucial part of the environment and deserve to be treated as such.
