An 80-meter rope is cut into 2 pieces given the ratio of 5:15. How long is the shorter rope? The longer rope?

Total length of rope = 80 m

Ratio of the two pieces of the rope = 5:15

Length of the shorter piece of rope,

 =  \frac{5}{20}  \times 80 = 20m

Length of longer piece of rope,

 =  \frac{15}{20}  \times 80 = 60m

Method 2 :-

Total length of rope = 80 m

Ratio of the two pieces of the rope = 5:15

Let,

Length of shorter piece of rope = 5x

Length of longer piece of rope = 15x

5x + 15x = 80 \\ 20x = 80 \\ x =  \frac{80}{20}  = 4

Therefore,

Length of shorter piece of rope = 5x = 5(4) = 20 m

Length of longer piece of rope = 15x = 15(4) = 60 m
