Answer:

In electrolysis, the cathode product is often a metal. If the cathode is completely immersed in the electrolyte, then the cathode becomes completely covered by metal. This is the basis of the technique of electroplating. In electroplating, a complete layer of a second metal is deposited on a first metal by electrolysis.

This may be done for a number of reasons. Steel bumpers on cars become more corrosion resistant when they are electroplated first with nickel and then with chromium. Steel camshafts in cars have improved wear resistance when they have been electroplated with chromium. Plain steel or aluminium parts in light fittings become more ornamental when they are electroplated with nickel and then chromium or brass.

EPNS stands for "electroplated nickel silver". Nickel silver is an alloy that contains copper, zinc, and nickel. It is often made more decorative by being covered with real silver, deposited by electrolysis.

It is even possible to electroplate plastic objects that have had their surfaces treated to let them conduct electricity.

Electroplating : The process of depositing , a thin layer of any desired metal on another material , by the passage of electric current, is known as electroplating.

process of electroplating :-

  • the article to be electroplated should be made the cathode of an electrolyte cell.
  • the anode is made of that pure metal which is to be coated on the article.
  • a suitable soluble salt of the anode metal is taken as the electrolyte.

According to your question the answer will be :-

Activity:-

Take iron as cathode and silver as anode. ( why I have taken cathode and anode see in the process of electroplating. You will understand ). dissolve two tablespoons of silver sulphate in it. Add few drops of dilute sulphuric acid to make it more conductive. connect the the silver the positive terminal and the iron to the negative terminal of the battery. Allow the steady current to passthrough this electrolyte for 20 - 30 minutes now carefully take out the plates from the solution.

You will find a little amount of silver plating on iron plate connected to negative terminal of the battery. it is silver from silver sulphate solution that has got deposited on this iron electrode.

how this happens ?

Ans :- electric current is passed through the silver sulphate solution , the silver sulphate solution dissociates into iron and sulphate ions. The free mobile silver ions are drawn to the cathode ( iron plate ) get converted into silver atoms and then get deposit on it. Sulphate ions move to the the silver plate where they react with iron to form silver sulphate again . Thus, silver is effectively removed from the anode and deposit on the cathode.
