Explanation:

when two or more bodies at different temperatures are brought into thermal contact, then net heat lost by the hot bodies is equal to the net heat gained by the cold bodies until they attain thermal equilibrium.this is known as principal of method of mixtures

PRINCIPLE OF METHOD OF MIXTURES.

Aim:- To determine principle of method of mixtures.

Appratus:- Two beakers,one large beaker,thermometer,hot water,cold water.

procedure:-

  1. Take two beakers with water.
  2. One beaker with hot water and the other with cold water.Let these masses be m1 and m2.
  3. Let the temperature of hot sample be T1 and cold sample be T2
  4. Pour the water in both beakers into a large beaker and measure the temperature of the mixture.Let this temperature be T

Observation:-

We observed that hot sample lost heat while the cold sample gained heat.so heat lost by the hot sample is equal to heat gained by the cold sample.

Net heat lost =Net heat gain

Explanation:-

heat lost by hot sample(Q1) = m1S(T1-T)

heat gained by cold sample (Q2) = m2S(T-T2)

From the above

Q1 =Q2

m1S(T1-T ) = m2S(T-T2)

m1ST1 - m1ST = m2ST - m2ST2

m1ST1+m2ST2 = m1ST +m2ST

S(m1T1+m2T2) = ST(m1+m2)

T =S(m1T1+m2T2)/S(m1+m2)

T=(m1T1+m2T2)/(m1+m2)
