If the metal reacts with water it will replace the Hydrogen from water and make Hydrogen gas (bubbles) and the metal hydroxide. The acid base indicator, phenolphthalein will turn pink in the presence of the base to help identify the spontaneity of the reactions.

Take about 10 ml of dilute HCl in a test tube and add a few zinc granules to it. We will observe the formation of gas bubbles on the surface of zinc granules. Pass the gas being evolved through the soap water.
