Given:

An air bubble is seen inside a solid sphere of glass (n=1.5) of 4.0 cm diameter at a  distance of 1.0cm from the surface of the sphere (on seeing along the diameter).

To find:

Determine the real position of the bubble inside the sphere.

Solution:

From the given information, we have the data as follows.

An air bubble is seen inside a solid sphere of glass (n = 1.5) of 4.0 cm diameter at a  distance of 1.0 cm from the surface of the sphere (on seeing along the diameter).

We will use the formula given as follows, that relates the refractive indices, image distance, virtual distance and the distance.

n₂/v - n₁/u = (n₂ - n₁)/R

1.0/-1.0 - 1.5/(-u) = (1.0 - 1.5)/(-2.0)

- 1 + 1.5/u = 0.5/2

u = - 1.2 cm

1.2 cm towards the left will be the real position of the bubble inside the sphere.
