• Market price = $ 800

• Selling price = $ 702

Question : An air conditioner is sold for $700 after a discount of 12.5%. (a) find the marked price of the air conditioner. (b) if a 10% discount is given on the marked price of the air conditioner before it is sold at a further discount of 2.5% , would the sale price still be $700? Show your working.

Step-by-step explanation :

(a)

Let the market price be $ x

Then, x * (1 - 12.5/100) = 700

or, x * (100 - 12.5) / 100 = 700

or, x * 87.5 = 700 * 100

or, x = 70000 / 87.5

or, x = 800

the required market price of the air conditioner is $ 800.

(b)

Now if 10% discount was given on the market price, the selling price of the air conditioner would be

= $ 800 * (1 - 10/100)

= $ 800 * (100 - 10) / 100

= $ 800 * 90 / 100

= $ 72000 / 100

= $ 720.

Again while selling with a discount of 2.5%, the selling price would be

= $ 720 * (1 - 2.5/100)

= $ 720 * (100 - 2.5) / 100

= $ 720 * 97.5 / 100

= $ 702

Thus it will be $ 700 no longer.

Answer:

( a ) The  market price of air conditioner is $800

( b ) The selling price for 10% discount on market price of air conditioner is $720   .

Step-by-step explanation:

Given as :

( a )

The selling price of Air conditioner = s,p = $ 700

The discount percentage = d% = 12.5%

Let The market price of air conditioner = $ m.p

According to question

Discount % = \dfrac{m.p - s.p}{m.p}

Or, 12.5% = 1 - \dfrac{s.p}{m.p}

Or, \dfrac{s.p}{m.p}  =  1 - 12.5%

Or, \dfrac{s.p}{m.p}  = 1 - 0.125

Or, \dfrac{s.p}{m.p} = 0.875

∴ m.p = \dfrac{s.p}{0.875}

Or, m.p = \dfrac{700}{0.875}

i.e market price = m.p = $ 800

So, The market price of air conditioner = m.p = $800

Hence, The  market price of air conditioner is $800

( b )

If a 10% discount is given on the marked price of the air conditioner before it is sold at a further discount of 12.5% . would selling price $700 ?

The market price of air conditioner = m.p = $800

The discount% applied = d% = 10%

Let The selling price = $ s.p

Again

Discount % = \dfrac{m.p - s.p}{m.p}

Or, 10% = 1 - \dfrac{s.p}{m.p}

Or, \dfrac{s.p}{m.p}  =  1 - 10%

Or, \dfrac{s.p}{m.p}  = 1 - 0.1

Or, \dfrac{s.p}{m.p} = 0.9

∴ s.p =  0.9 × m.p

Or, s.p = 0.9 × $800

i.e selling price = s.p = $ 720

So, The selling price = s.p = $720

Hence, The selling price for 10% discount on market price of air conditioner is $720   . Answer
