An air conditioner of 2kW is used in an electric circuit having a fuse of 10A rating. If the potential difference of the supply is 220V, will the fuse be able to withstand, when the air conditioner is switched on? Justify your answer

P=2000 W

I=10 A

V=220 V

P=VI

2000=220x10

2000≠2200

As proved by calculations, the maximum power that can be used for the A.C.

is 2200 W. Hence, the fuse would be able to withstand the power.

When the air conditioner is switched on,it will not blow off.

Explanation:

The power of the  air conditioner is P = 2 kW = 2000 W.

The potential difference is, V =220 V.

The rating of the fuse, I = 10 A.

The relation between power, potential difference and current is

P =V I

Substitute the values, we get

2000W=220V\times I

I=\frac{2000W}{220V}

I = 9.09 A

The rating current of fuse is 10 A and calculate current slightly below, so the fuse will withstand.

Thus, when the air conditioner is switched on, it will not blow off.
