An air rifle pellet of mass 2g is fired into a block of modelling clay mounted
on a model railway truck. The truck and modelling clay have a mass of
0.1 kg. The truck moves off after the pellet hits the modelling clay with an initial velocity of 0.8 m/s. State the momentum of the pillet just before it hits the modelling clay.

Answer:

air rifle pellet of mass 2 g is fired into a block of plasticine mounted on a model railway truck. The truck and plasticine have a mass of 0.1 kg. The truck moves off after the pellet hits the plasticine with an initial velocity of 0.8 m/s. Calculate the momentum of the plasticine and the truck after the collision. Hence work out the velocity of the pellet just before it hits the plasticine.

In this problem the momentum of the truck and plasticine and the bullet is the combined mass x velocity:

0.1+0.002 = 0.102kg x 0.8 m/s = 0.082 kgm/s

:

Velocity of the pellet:

m (bullet) v(bullet ) = 0.082 kgm/s

v = 0.082/0.002 = 41 m/s
