An allergy is a medical condition that is noncommunicable, which as you know, means that it cannot be transmitted from one person to another. It is caused by the body's unusual reaction to certain substances. We say funusual' because a substance that causes an allergic reaction in one person usually does not cause such a reaction in most people. Substances that cause allergies are called allergens. Pollen, fur, mould, smoke, dust, eggs, prawns and nuts are some common allergens. Exposure to allergens may cause symptoms such as continuous sneezing, a stuffy, itchy or runny nose, watery or swollen eyes, intense itching and rashes, nausea and diarrhoea. In some cases, the reaction may be severe enough to cause death. Allergies may be inherited or may develop later in the life of an individual. They may also disappear with the passage of time.
