Aluminium is a very active metal and its position in the electrochemical series is quite high. But it is not attacked by nitric acid both dilute and concentrated. This is on account of the reason that the metal is initially oxidized to aluminium oxide on reacting with nitric acid. The layer of alluminium oxide gets deposited on the surface of the matter and forms a protective coating around it. this prevents the father attacked by the a seat on the metal. This prevents the further attacked by the a seat on the metal. In other words, we can say that aluminium metal becomes passive when reacted with nitric acid.
