An altitude of a triangle is one third the length of its corresponding base. If the altitude was increased by 4cm and the base was decreased by 2cm, the area of the triangle would remain the same. Find the base and the altitude of the triangle.

Answer:

Let the base be X

Then altitude = 1/3 X

New altitude = X/3  + 4

New base = X - 2

=> 1/2 x (X-2) x ((X-2)/3 + 4)   =  1/2 x (1/3 X) x X

=> X = 10

Hence,base is 10cm and altitude is 3.33....cm
