An an object having a capability to do work is said to be possess energy.

An object is said to possess energy if it has capability to do work. The SI unit of energy is joule, whether it is potential energy or kinetic energy. Potential energy and kinetic energy are two kinds of mechanical energy.

The object gains energy equal to the work done on it. Let the work done on the object against gravity be W. Since, work done on the object is equal to mgh, an energy equal to mgh units is gained by the object. This is the Potential Energy (EP) of the object
