Joe Thomson goes to Maggie's home again to attend her mother's funeral who had died due to excess alcohol consumption. There he observes that little Maggie is left all by herself and that there was no one for her over there. Maggie had injured her spine at a very young age and that is why she was unable to move and take care of herself. When the funeral was over, one by one, all the villagers left but just as Joe was leaving she told him to take her along with him to his house so that she can stay at a safe place with someone that she knew of.
