An ant starts at x = 20cm on a piece of graph paper and walks along the x axis to
x = -20cm. It turns around and walks back to x = -10cm. What is the ant’s displacement
and total distance travelled? Explain your answer with proper reasoning?

Answer:

Explanation:

A) the ant displacement --> -30 cm

(-20) cm+(-10) cm = -30 cm

(We add up x1 and x2 because when you go from -20 to -10, you're going from left to right which turns it into an addition instead of a subtraction)

B) the total displacement is 50 cm

20+(-20)+(-10)= 50 cm { Do not follow the signs rule. the negative signs don't count here. it is neither positive nor negative)

from +20 to -20, there is 40 cm plus turning around -10 cm is equal to 50 cm in total
