Answer:

Because an apple has very small mass and gravitational force acting on a body is directly proportional to its mass

There are various reasons :

1. The mass of the earth is very huge as compared to the mass of the apple . Since, mass is directly proportional to inertia, earth will retain its state while the apple,due to less inertia, will attract towards the earth.

2. Consider the formula:

F = G.M.m /r^2

Through this formula, it can be directly understood that the magnitude of the force is directly proportional to the masses . Though the apple falling down exerts the force equivalent to the force exerted by the earth , but the mass of the earth is so huge that the earth cannot get attracted towards the apple.

Hope it helps
