Reason

It is because we taste the food using our nose and tongue. However, if we can't smell the food, the taste of apple, potato, and onion will be the same. This is because the tongue can sense the five tastes,

  • Sweet
  • Salty
  • Sour
  • Bitter
  • Umami

but cannot sense the smell.

More Information

Heat receptors detect spiciness. However, other tastes aren't detected by heat receptors. This is the reason we don't categorize spiciness as a taste.

If we rub a chili pepper on our skin we can feel the heat in the spot.
