An aqueous solution of cobalt(III) chloride is mixed with liquid ammonia and stirred well, a violet coloured solid is formed . it is washed with dry ether and the following observations were made : The violet solid is heteroleptic ligated compound, has a octahedral geometry and produces one mole of white precipitate with AgNO3 . On warming the solution of compound in water its colour changes to green. When stirred with excess of ammonia an orange colour solid is formed.
The following questions are multiple choice questions. Choose the most appropriate answer:
The correct formulation of the complex is
[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 b) [Co(NH3)6]Cl3 c) [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl d) [Co(NH3)4Cl3]
The hybrid orbitals leading to formation of the complex are:
Sp3d2 b) d2sp3 c) sp2d3 d) dsp2
The violet and green colour solid are
a)Optical isomers c) complexes with different polyhedron
b) geometrical isomers d) [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl and [Co(NH3)6]Cl3
(OR)
The orange colour solid is correctly given as :
a) [Co(NH3)3Cl3] b) [Co(NH3)5 Cl]Cl2 c) [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl d) [Co(NH3)6]Cl3
The orange colour complex is
Homoleptic b) heteroleptic c) polynuclear complex c) inner metallic complex.

Explanation:

means that :-

\rm{\dfrac{ Number \ of \ Possible \ Outcomes}{Total \ Outcomes}}

Total Outcomes

Number of Possible Outcomes

Now, going parts by parts:-

A) part is not applicable as zero cannot be a possible answer.

B) part, 2 same occurences cannot take place back to back. It's wrong.

C) Let us check this as C and D are possible. But, we need to check it!

\sf{\dfrac{2 + 3 + 4 }{6}}

6

2+3+4

\sf{\dfrac{9}{6}}

6

9

is not a possible answer.

D) part, let's check:-

\sf{\dfrac{1 + 2 + 3 }{6}}

6

1+2+3

\sf{\dfrac{6}{6}}

6

6

=1, So, D) part is the correct answer
