because aqueous solution sodium chloride is also known as brime solution and this reaction chlorine is passed in brine solution and electricity is passed through this solution . in this reaction sodium chloride react with chlorine in presence of electricity to give strong base sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas.thus due to strong base and chlorine gas this is also known as chlor alkali process . this is used for electrolytic extration because in this reactio the end product are NaOH .

in presence of electricity
NACL+ CL2 —————— >NAOH CL2
