Concept-

Let the number of rows and number of columns be and then use the formula : Total number of men = row × column

Given-

There are total 9820 men in army contingent.

Find-

Find the number of men in each row and column and number of men left out.

Solution-

The number of rows and columns are equal.

Hence, square of a number should be equal to 9280.

But, 9280 is not a square number, hence we find the closest square number, which is 99² = 9801

So, the number of men in each row and column is 99, and the number of men left out = (9820 - 9801) = 19

Therefore, number of men in each row and column is 99 and the number of men left out is 19.

OTHER METHOD:

Let  number of rows and number of columns be x

Total number of men = row × column

9820 = x × x

9820 = x²

But, 9820 is not a perfect square , so we find the closest perfect square , which is 99² = 9801

Number of men in each row and column = 99 men

Number of men left out = 9820 - 9801 = 19 men

Therefore, number of men in each row and column is 99 and the number of men left out is 19.
